I always love stumbling across other artists whose work captures the tension between compassion and contempt for humanity that seems to define so much of my own life. Joan Cornellà’s art seems like the sort of stuff that will get people to either sleep with you or hate you forever. Hang any of these in your house and I bet you will lose longtime friends and make new ones.
Beyond the obvious subversiveness of the subject matter, I am amazed at Cornellà’s ability to use a few panels without text to tell stories that end up in places you would never expect, all the while maintaining their own internal logic. I also like the contrast of dark themes with happy colors and a retro kids’ storybook style.
